AKIO MOMOTA Koku-yu Ceramics

KOKU-YU: 黒釉

The Harmony of Black and White
For Akio Momota, black symbolizes elegance and grace, while white embodies holiness and serenity. The KOKU-YU collection, which translates to "Black Glaze," unites the beauty of these two contrasting colors in a seamless artistic expression.

More about the collection

Momota persevered tirelessly to achieve the perfect shades of glaze. When he finally combined the darkest blue and pale blue-tinged white on his porcelain, he was deeply moved by their beauty. This pivotal moment inspired him to further explore the interplay between these colors. Fired at 1,300°C, the glazes sometimes repel each other, while at other times, they intertwine unpredictably, creating captivating, one-of-a-kind patterns.

The allure of this collection lies in its uniqueness, where art and nature converge to produce truly exceptional pieces. Each ceramic item is meticulously wheel-thrown, featuring a delicate rim that rests comfortably against the lips, enhancing the drinking experience. The signature black glaze forms a wide, deep band along the rim, transitioning into a pale blue-tinged white glaze that covers the base. The smooth, almost moistened texture of the glaze adds to its tactile charm.

With their elegant forms and balanced weight, these versatile ceramics are perfect for enjoying espresso, coffee, tea, or sake. The collection also includes small plates, ideal as saucers or for serving sweets, as well as exclusive matcha bowls, perfect for both daily rituals and traditional tea ceremonies.
