At MITSUBACHI.EU, each ceramic piece is presented in a traditional kiri box (桐箱), made of lightweight and durable paulownia wood. The kiri box serves not only as packaging but also as a certificate of authenticity and a storage case that preserves the ceramic’s value over time. The act of unboxing is part of the Japanese experience—one that deserves to be done with care and appreciation.
Follow this step-by-step guide to properly unpack your kiri box and ensure that your handmade Japanese ceramic is handled with the respect it deserves.
Step 1: Observe the Details
Before opening the box, take a moment to appreciate its craftsmanship and significance: ✔ The artisan’s signature and seal, marking authenticity. ✔ The fabric cord (sanada-himo), carefully tied to secure the contents. ✔ The washi paper, which provides a protective layer and symbolizes refinement.
These elements make the kiri box more than just packaging—they tell a story of tradition and quality.
Step 2: Untying the Sanada-himo (Fabric Cord)
Hold the knot in the center and gently loosen the loops by pulling the ends of the cord.
Pull the cords to remove most of the rope from the box.
Avoid pulling too hard—this fabric cord is traditionally used to protect the box and can be reused for future storage.
Once untied, lay the cord flat to prevent creasing.
👉 Tip: The way the cord is tied is part of the presentation—some collectors even re-tie it after use! If you'd like to re-tie the cord properly, watch this

Step 3: Removing the Washi Paper Cover
Once the cord is removed, you will see a layer of washi paper covering the kiri box lid.
Carefully lift the washi paper, ensuring not to tear or crease it, as it is delicate and part of the presentation and protection.
Keep it as it is released from the box for later storage.
Step 4: Lifting the Lid
Hold the kiri box firmly and gently lift the lid straight up.
If the lid feels tight, lightly tap the edges to loosen it without forcing.
Some boxes are a bit tight, which means they may need a slight wiggle to open smoothly.
This tight fit helps protect the ceramic inside by keeping it secure from movement or damage.
Step 5: Unwrapping the Ceramic Piece
Inside the box, you will find the ceramic piece wrapped in two very soft protective paper layers.
Carefully open each of the four paper flaps one by one, revealing the ceramic piece inside.
The ceramic is wrapped in a distinctive orange cloth, deliberately chosen to enhance the unboxing experience and provide additional protection.
Hold the ceramic securely to prevent it from sliding out.
Slowly unwrap the cloth, ensuring you support the ceramic with both hands.
At this moment, take a moment to admire the details—the glaze, the weight, and the delicate craftsmanship of your handmade piece.
Step 6: Storing and Preserving the Kiri Box
The kiri box is not disposable—it is part of the ceramic’s history and should be kept for storage and safekeeping.
If you plan to store your ceramic inside the box again, you can carefully re-wrap it in washi paper and re-tie the fabric cord.
Many collectors keep the box alongside their ceramics, as it enhances both its authenticity and long-term value.
Sustainable Packaging Choice
At MITSUBACHI.EU, we have deliberately chosen to pack each ceramic piece sustainably—wrapped in an orange cloth and protected by two soft layers of paper, avoiding any plastic or foam materials. This ensures that the unboxing experience aligns with our commitment to preserving both craftsmanship and the environment.
Why the Kiri Box Matters
The kiri box is an integral part of Japanese craftsmanship, used for centuries to store and protect precious objects such as ceramics, tea utensils, and even calligraphy brushes. The natural properties of paulownia wood make it resistant to moisture and insects, ensuring that your ceramic remains in perfect condition for generations.
At MITSUBACHI.EU, we honor this tradition by presenting all our handmade ceramics in authentic kiri boxes, making each unboxing a cultural and aesthetic luxury gift experience.
