At MITSUBACHI.EU, we believe in preserving the essence of Japanese craftsmanship, not only through the beautiful handmade ceramics we curate but also through the way they are presented. Each piece is more than an object—it’s a story, carefully protected and displayed in traditional Japanese packaging that embodies centuries of artistry and cultural heritage.
One of the most beautiful elements of our collection is the paulownia wood box, known in Japan as the kiribako. This elegant packaging, paired with a fabric cord and washi paper, transforms unboxing into a meaningful experience.
What Is a Kiribako?
A kiribako, or paulownia wood box, has been a cornerstone of Japanese craftsmanship for centuries. This lightweight yet durable wood, known for its moisture-resistant and insect-repelling properties, has been used since the Nara period (710–794 AD) to protect valuable objects such as ceramics, tea utensils, and traditional clothing like kimono.
At MITSUBACHI.EU, the kiribako is more than just a protective box. Each box is a work of art in itself, handcrafted to safeguard and complement the ceramic masterpiece inside. The artisan’s signature on each box, serves as a mark of authenticity and value. These boxes are not only a testament to the care and skill of the artisans but also an enduring symbol of Japanese tradition.
The Fabric Cord (Sanada-himo): A Symbol of Care
The sanada-himo, a flat woven fabric cord, is used to secure the kiribako. Dating back to the Edo period, this cord traditionally crafted from cotton or silk and used for practical and ceremonial purposes.
For us at MITSUBACHI.EU, the act of untying the sanada-himo becomes part of the experience. It’s a deliberate, respectful gesture that mirrors the careful thought and effort put into every step of the artisan’s process.
Washi Paper: The Touch of Elegance
To complete the packaging, each kiribako is topped with a piece of washi paper, a traditional Japanese handmade paper. Washi, created from mulberry tree fibers, represents purity, refinement, and simplicity. It protects the box’s contents while adding an elegant layer to the presentation.
This small detail reflects the Japanese philosophy of “shibui”, which values understated beauty and subtle sophistication. At MITSUBACHI.EU, this detail ensures every unboxing feels like a moment of connection to Japan’s cultural and artistic heritage.
Why Packaging Matters at MITSUBACHI.EU
At MITSUBACHI.EU, we aim to bring the essence of Japanese craftsmanship to Europe, celebrating not just the ceramics but the traditions that surround them. Packaging is an integral part of the experience. The kiribako, sanada-himo, and washi paper are as much a reflection of the artisan’s skill as the ceramics themselves.
By preserving these traditional elements, we hope to share the deeper meaning behind Japanese artistry—honoring its past while introducing it to new audiences as authentic, precious and luxury gifts.
